Empathy is defined as the ability to identify with the emotional state of others in a way that builds connection, creates safety and enables trust. Creating safety may sound like an odd concept, but as Simon Sinek explores in his TED Talk ‘Why good leaders make you feel safe’– you can’t just tell people to ‘trust you’ and expect they’ll cooperate. You have to uncover what’s at the root of their concerns and frustrations. This is what separates good leaders from great leaders. Empathy is redefining the way we lead. To get results with and through others, the best starting point is understanding what they’re thinking and feeling. When you understand what is at the crux of their motivation, you’ll know what you need to do to help them offload the emotion so you can access their higher t...

678 It occurred to me that most people who write about leadership are no longer leaders. Easy for them to espouse their Monday morning philosophy-harder for the leaders under fire to take " former leader" direction. I just read an article in a business magazine written by a well-known "former leader." I was horrified. One of the "key" points was that "clarity is the antidote of anxiety"; therefore "clarity" is the main concern of the effective leader. What a bunch of baloney. If you're a leader, and clarity is your main concern, nothing much is going on. To me, leadership is multifaceted. There is no "one" concern more powerful than the other. Lead by example, loyalty of team, achievement of goals, profit to company, excellence of performance, great communication skills, and fulfillment on the job. All of these are more important than "clarity." To me, if a leader isn't a bit "muddy" along the way, something's wrong. "Clarity is the antidote of anxiety." Bogus. If a leader has anxiety, the first step would be to discover what's causing it, and then take the necessary action to eliminate it. Being "clear" is a silly buzzword that means nothing. It's as meaningless as "added value" or "on purpose" or "focus." Just empty leadership-created words and phrases. So, if you're a boss, manager, or leader of some kind, listen up. This lesson will help you clarify the real-world skills you need to be a true leader. I'm talking about the leadership qualities needed to succeed: the action items, principles, and skills to employ so leadership works. So it works for you, your people, your customers, your vendors, and your company-in that order. But there are degrees of leadership effectiveness. Your ability to master these leadership skills are in direct proportion to your ability to lead. If you're looking for clarity, look no further than these skills: Get your people to like you and believe in you. Hated leaders are eventually overthrown-or fired. If a hated leader cannot be fired, people will quit. Make sure your people and their jobs are a "fit." People need to feel comfortable about the tasks they are performing and the space they're performing them in. Let your people share their goals with you, then modify them together. When people set their own goals, they think they can achieve them. Give your people specific tasks and clear direction. Make sure all employees know what they are responsible for and how to perform or carry out their responsibilities. And make sure they see the big picture and how their part fits into it. Create an environment in which people love their work and their workplace. Make the workplace fun. Make sure employees can complete tasks with a sense of pride and satisfaction. Provide a GREAT and happy atmosphere to work in. Make the duty, task, or project challenging-without being oppressive or stressful. Make sure all "money matters" are clear. Don't mess with employees' money. And worse, don't reduce pay or commissions to cut costs. Pay fair, benefit well, and provide security. Otherwise people will leave. Make sure paychecks are accurate. People count their money and count on it. Nothing dings morale more than messed up wages. Encourage your people. The most effective leaders are coaches. They stand on the sidelines and cheer for their players. To encourage your people, buy everyone a copy of The Little Engine That Could. Reward your people. It doesn't have to be money; however, if you ask them what they want, money will always be their answer. Whatever you give them, don't be cheap about it. Make them feel valued. By your actions and your achievements - be their hero. If you want them to become dedicated players, your people need to see your dedication. If you are the one driving the train and making big things happen, you will become a hero to those who respect your ethics and accomplishments. How's that for a dose of clarity? Many espouse the leadership philosophy of "You don't have to be liked, you just have to be respected." This is a great statement if you're looking for high turnover. People want to work for people they like AND respect. Let go of your ounce of power. Benevolence works better. The word manager brings up a whole host of thoughts such as outdated or out of touch and it is up to us to change that mentality If you were to ask someone on the street what comes to mind when they hear the word manager they might say things like out of touch, outdated, command and control, etc...However, if you were to ask that same person what they think of when they hear the word leader they would probably have much more positive things to say about it than they said about a manager. When you bring up the word leader people tend to get excited and they think about someone who is a visionary, someone who inspires and someone who is creative. So why is there such a distinction between the two words? There really should not be a difference between a manager and a leader. Language is so important and I think that we need to start to redefine these words to make them equal. We have the power to do that. If we could focus on hiring inspiring, creative, innovative and visionary people to fill the role of managers in our organizations it would change our mindset. People would start equate the word manager with all of the positive connotations that leaders have now. So let’s start changing the definition of what a manager is. What comes to mind when you hear the word manager? What about when you hear the word leader? ---------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE FUTURE IN FIVE Will AI take over the world? Are you the leader or just the boss? The leader of a symphony orchestra knows how to play every instrument. He also knows how those instruments blend together to create a symphonic sound. The leader of a choir knows every note that everybody has to sing, and knows how the voices and notes blend together to make harmony. They're actually called "conductors" - but you know what I mean. When you can take both of these leadership elements and put them together, you have symphonic harmony. You have a team that knows their individual talents, knows their individual notes, knows their lyrics, knows how to play, knows how to sing, and knows their timing of when to do both - to create team harmony. And IF the leader is prepared, in control, and respected, the results can be spectacular. If you're the leader of these people and these elements, it is imperative that you know how each player must perform, or you will fail. Same in sales. All sales leaders and bosses want their people to be a team. All salespeople resist it, because they just want to sell -- but they often need other team members (accounting, production, shipping, service) to make it happen. THE TEAM SECRET IS: Everyone must know his or her own skill and know it perfectly. Until they know themselves, they can't play well, or sing well with others. THE LEADERSHIP SECRET IS: To be able to extract the excellence of their people's performance combined with the excellence of their own performance. Often salespeople don't live up to their potential and don't do their best, or they make mistakes along the way. This is where leadership can make it happen, or break it down and continue with less than stellar performance. THE LEADERSHIP REALITY IS: If you're a real leader, you can't blame the players for poor performance. You have to be the teacher, the conductor, the coach, and the encourager. On the eve of a symphony performance, thousands of people pay to watch the orchestra AND the conductor perform. And at the end there is usually a thunderous applause, cheers of BRAVO!, flowers given out all over the place, and, at the urging of the conductor, members of the orchestra standing one or two at a time to take individual applause and a bow. You, as the spectator (the customer), paid for and saw a one-hour performance. But the outcome was not determined by their performance that evening. The outcome was determined long ago when they were practicing. If they didn't practice, their performance would not have been acceptable. Same with you. And the key is the message I'm trying to transfer. Leaders and orchestra members PRACTICED TOGETHER. It's the same in sales. You can't just be the boss or the manager. You also have to be the leader by example, and the coach who knows the game. If you've ever seen the video of the immortal UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden, on leadership -- you saw him on the court passing the ball to his players at the top of the foul circle leading the weave. He shows his players by example, practicing with them. The more you practice together, the more likely you are to win the championship, or get a standing ovation. In sales this means go with your people. Make calls with them. Help them make more sales. Be their coach, not their boss. Your time is as valuable as their time. Invest your time in getting ready to lead and coach your people. Invest your time in preparing new information for your people that they consider valuable. Invest your time in your own personal development by studying attitude and encouragement as two of your self-determining factors of your success. Here are two more indicators you're on the winning path: 1. You're attractive. Not pretty. I'm talking about people calling you up on the phone because they want to work for you. Did you ever have a college professor that everyone would line up for and hope they made it into his class? The questions you need to ask yourself are: Who's willing to line up and wait for me? Who wants to play on my team? Who wants to sell for me? 2. Your former players stay in touch with you. People move on with their careers. I want anyone that leaves to say that you were the best coach, the best leader they ever had. You don't just win best coach -- you win the game of life. Boss or leader? Boss or coach? Boss or teacher? Boss or encourager? The choices are obvious as they are written. Your challenge is to make them a reality. I hope you do. Visit http://www.Gitomer.com for more information. When you understand what is at the crux of their motivation, you’ll know what you need to do to help them offload the emotion so you can access their higher thinking and tap into their potential. Empathy isn’t just about feelings, it’s actually a gateway to results.

Murphy, PhD, Vice President, Student and Academic Services, Cornell University While we know that there always will be some level of stress, competition, and pressure in a college student’s life, must success always be equated with high stress? Is it possible for a university to continue promoting a culture of academic rigor and excellence, while simultaneously encouraging positive student mental health? And what role can, and should, the university administration play in this regard? In this panel, leaders from three universities will discuss their experiences of working to affect change on an institutional level, in order to redefine the climate of stress on campus and create a healthier university culture. Anyone who wanna learn English can come and join ! :D -- transcript -- How many of you are completely comfortable with calling yourselves a leader? See, I've asked that question all the way across the country, and everywhere I ask it, no matter where, there's always a huge portion of the audience that won't put up their hand. And I've come to realize that we have made leadership into something bigger than us. We've made into something beyond us. We've made it about changing the world. How many of you guys have a lollipop moment, a moment where someone said something or did something that you feel fundamentally made your life better? All right. And every single one of you has been the catalyst for a lollipop moment. You have made someone's life better by something that you said or that you did. Marianne Williamson said, "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, and not our darkness, that frightens us." And my call to action today is that we need to get over that. We need to get over our fear of how extraordinarily powerful we can be in each other's lives. We need to get over it, so we can move beyond it, and our little brothers and our little sisters, and one day our kids - or our kids right now - can watch and start to value the impact we can have on each other's lives more than money and power and titles and influence. We need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments, how many of them we create, how many of them we acknowledge, how many of them we pay it forward, and how many of them we say thank you for. Because we've made leadership about changing the world, and there is no world. There's only six billion understandings of it, and if you change one person's understanding of it, one person's understanding of what they're capable of, one person's understanding of how much people care about them, you've changed the whole thing. And if we can understand leadership like that, I think if we can redefine leadership like that, I think we can change everything. And it's a simple idea, but I don't think it's a small one, and I want to thank you all so much for letting me share it with you today.
